Commodore Duchess was originally built in 1925—designed by architect, Earl Roberts. The north half of the building was constructed in 1927 where both sides operated as a hotel for many years.
Commodore Duchess was then purchased by the University of Washington in 1960 from its original owner, Herbert Smith. After a renovation of the building, the university opened the building to house students in the fall of 1997.
Today, the Commodore Duchess proudly houses students who are currently enrolled at the University of Washington.
